WHY SHOULD YOU PARTICIPATE IN HNAT?

Natural hydrogen E&P has entered a new phase. After the pioneering exploration of Hydroma in Mali, then NH2 in the United States, and despite a slight slowdown during the covid period, the number of permits issued has proliferated.

Australia, South Australia to be precise, was the first State to adapt its law, followed by several others. France has recognized H2 as a natural resource since 2022, Colombia is working on a new law, but applications for exploration permits also exist in other countries such as Kosovo and Spain. Meanwhile, some States or regions are working on a global assessment of their potential, as in Australia, Morocco, Quebec and the New Aquitaine region. Although data on H2 in the subsurface is still lacking in many basins, the key question now is more how to find an accumulation than where H2 could be generated. Wells targeting H2 reserves will be drilled before the end of 2023 in Australia and the US.

Today, many companies have operating blocks, and many service companies also have dedicated H2 well drilling and exploration tool offerings. Methods and tools to characterize the potential of H2 generating rock and to model the H2 migration and accumulation are also emerging.

After two years of virtual HNAT, it’s time to get together and talk about our practices, our current and future drillings, and our doubts. The two days of HNAT 2023 in Australia will cover all these different aspects: governments, operating and services companies will be there, as well as research centers working on the topic.

As we all know, legislation is fundamental, and representatives of States in favor of natural H2 E&P will be on hand to explain their approach and how to apply for licenses on their countries. For instance, Colombia which will open rounds in the coming months will present its philosophy, and prospective areas. The operating companies such as Gold Hydrogen in Australia or 45-8 in Europe will be there to share their experience, the start-up but also the major ones such as Engie or Ecopetrol. The service companies that developed tools (Vinci, Slb, ..) will present what they can offer in terms of rocks or gas characterizations. The academic world (CSIRO, geoscience Australia, USGS, UPPA, IPGP …) will also present the last improvements on the H2 system understanding and kinetic of the H2 generating reaction.

Whether you’re already involved in exploration or a neophyte looking to understand what’s going on, Hnat-2023 in Perth is the place for you. The Hydrogen Decade: One Dollar, One Kilogram by 2030 

Hydrogen Production is estimated to grow significantly by 2050, with $15 trillion investments needed to meet global demand. Incentivized by global public and private sector commitments, low-carbon hydrogen is set to be a key pillar in the energy transition and the race to net-zero.

O 51º Congresso Brasileiro de Educação em Engenharia (COBENGE 2023) ocorre no período de 18 a 20 de setembro de 2023, retornando para o formato presencial, na cidade do Rio de Janeiro-RJ, realizado pela Associação Brasileira de Educação em Engenharia (ABENGE) e organizado em parceria com o Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica Celso Suckow da Fonseca (Cefet/RJ)

Iberia is set to be Europe’s future clean energy hub following attempts by the Spanish and Portuguese governments to accelerate the energy transition.

In a move signaling Spain’s commitment to a more sustainable future and more energy independence, the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition (MITECO) revealed a draft of the revised National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) at the end of June. This draft outlined more ambitious 2030 targets for renewable energy and hydrogen, closely aligned with the EU ambitions towards a cleaner energy transition.

Setting a significantly higher goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the draft outlines Spain’s target for renewable energy to account for 81% of electricity generation by 2030, as well as a significant rise in the target capacity of hydrogen production through electrolysis, which has been increased to 11 GW - a figure nearly triple that of the original. The plan details total investments of up to EUR 294 billion, 85% of which it hopes to attribute to private sources, the other 15% being from public funds. Of the total investment, 40% will be allocated to renewable energy, 29% to energy savings and efficiency, 18% to energy networks, and 12% to the electrification of the economy. In keeping with this new draft of the National Energy and Climate Plan, Spain has also recently partnered with Italy and Morocco, as part of the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative.

Portugal has made clear its clean energy aspirations too, with ambitious new targets for renewable energy and hydrogen production. These saw Portugal more than double its 2030 goals for solar energy capacity and electrolysis installations and up its target for greenhouse gas emission reduction to 55%, reflecting its commitment to a transition away from natural gas-fired power plants, and toward a carbon neutral future.
